Revision Joint Replacement (Joint Revisions)

Joint replacement is one of the most successful procedures in medicine. When a joint becomes worn out or injured a primary (or first time) joint replacement occurs. These procedures allow most patients to regain an active lifestyle free from chronic joint pain. Over time the artificial joint may fail for a variety of reasons. When this occurs patients typically experience pain, swelling, stiffness, warmth at the joint, and an inability to continue everyday activities.

After reviewing your images, a physical exam, and a discussion of history and symptoms Dr. Buch may recommend a second surgery on the joint as a  treatment option. A revision joint replacement involves removing and replacing all or parts of the implants to resolve symptoms and restore function. Both primary and revision surgeries are performed for these reasons however a revision surgery is much more complex then a primary joint replacement. Revision surgeries are typically longer, require specialized implants and instruments, and requires extensive preoperative planning.

The most common reasons joint replacement patients need a revision:
  • Implant loosening
  • Wear
  • Infection
  • Fractures
  • Instability
  • Stiffness
